May 2008
Happy Memorial Day!
The Wine Room will be closed Monday, May 26 in honor of Memorial Day. We will reopen Tuesday, May 27.
You are probably wondering what ever happened to our newsletter called The Wine Press. Well, it’s back, just in a new form and location on our new and expanded Website. But the purpose is essentially the same. We want to keep you completely informed and up to date on all that The Wine Room on Park Avenue has to offer. Much has happened since our last newsletter: Tom Johnson of Silver Oak Winery conducted a wonderful Silver Oak Wine Dinner catered by our friends at Luma; at least one series of wine classes has come and gone; Cliff Lede was here showing his excellent Stag’s Leap Cabernet Sauvignons; long time winemaker Ted Edwards of Freemark Abbey was our guest and poured from magnums of four different vintages from both his Sycamore & Bosche Vineyards from the 1990s, and on and on it goes. As you have gathered, we are very active here at The Wine Room both in promoting the best wines from around the world and educating our clients about them. But more importantly, not only do you get to learn about wines, you get to taste them from our unique Enomatic machines! Taste before you buy! What a great concept!
Many of you were astute enough to purchase on futures the great 2005 Bordeauxs. Many of those wines have arrived and the rest are not far behind. But there are still a number of the very highest rated 2005s available for purchase. Not at the early futures prices, but at current and very competitive pre-arrival pricing. Please inquire as to what of these literal wine treasures is still available by calling David Black at 407-696-9463.
Brown Bag Challenge
Hurry! The competition ends 5/31/08.
How well do you know your reds? Take the Brown Bag Challenge and see if your palate is as savvy as you think it is!
We have selected 8 red wine varietals and put them all in the front machine in the lobby – but we’ve hidden the bottles in numbered brown bags.
Buy a $25 SmartCard and tell the cashier you want to take the Brown Bag Challenge. You’ll receive an entry with all eight wines listed.
Then, taste all eight wines and try to match their names with the numbers on the brown bags. Guess all 8 wines correctly and you’ll win a $50 SmartCard.
All our winners will be notified on Monday, June 2nd!
By George, we have a hit!
And there's only 1 week left.

Every Monday through Wednesday, when you add $30 or more to your Wine Room card, we’ll add 25¢ for every dollar! Not Your Ordinary Chocolate!
Established in 2004 in San Diego, CA, Eclipse Chocolat specializes in creating exotic chocolate infusions in truffles, solid bars and other exciting confections. Eclipse strives to expand the boundaries of chocolate flavors while operating in an eco-friendly manner and donating ten percent of its annual net profit to the development of local and regional non-profits and charities. Some of the various flavors that The Wine Room carries are Macadamia Ginger, Sea-Salt Nib, Basil-Mint and Blackberry Sage. Look for more flavors coming next month, including Moroccan Spice, Mango Masala and Expresso Walnut.
The Perfect Cheese Selection.
Lavender Fields Forever.
This delightful, seasonal Lavender Cheddar combines organic lavender blossoms with a creamy, buttery Food Alliance-certified cheese curd for a Cheddar that is mild and sweet with a floral back note. Great with Syrah!
Enjoy this limited time selection on one of our Ala Carte Cheese Plates or take it home and enjoy it for only $6.99/quarter lb.
Where’s the Fruit?
Many of our patrons have asked us to add a fruit plate to our menu. Others have asked for bigger portions of cheese on our Flight selections. Coming soon, The Wine Room will do both! A Fruit Plate is being added and will feature a variety of seasonal berries, grapes, apples and more. Since our Flights will no longer include fruit garnishes, we will be including additional servings of your favorite cheeses. Now there is a little something added for everyone!
What you always wanted to know about wine but had nobody to ask.
Question: What is the most important thing about a wine that determines its color, aroma and taste?
Answer: The grape type from which it is made.
You may have never really thought about it, but each grape type (or varietal) has inherent qualities that, in one form or another, will be present in the wine made from that grape. In fact, if you taste, say, a ripe Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon grape from the vine, you can get some idea as to the basic flavors their wines will have. A Pinot Noir, a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Merlot or a Shiraz should always be recognizable as an expression of the grape. To illustrate the point, let’s see what inherent qualities the Cabernet Sauvignon grape has — to some extent or other — no matter where it is grown and no matter what finishing winery techniques are used. The Cabernet Sauvignon grape is very small and thick-skinned. And since color and tannin both come from the grape skin, wines made from this grape will always be relatively dark in color and high in tannin. But there are other built-in varietal characteristics of this grape. It often has an aroma and taste of chocolate, a touch of mint, hints of deep-forest herbs and plants as well as black currant or black cherry fruit. These qualities pretty well define most Cabernet Sauvignons. Now you know that if you like these qualities in a wine, Cabernet Sauvignons are for you. All you have to do now is find the best ones at the best prices and your work is done and your pleasure has just begun.
